Tyler & Kelly’s New Home
My son Tyler and daughter-in-law Kelly just bought their first house. Remember the excitement you felt when you spent that first night in your new home? I’m very excited for them and happy to help out with any decorating projects they need.
They purchased a lovely 50’s ranch in a suburban neighborhood. There had been room additions over the years and the previous homeowners updated the kitchen.
Since Tyler and Kelly didn’t have to move out of their apartment for a month, there was plenty of time to fix-up a few things, paint and replace carpeting. It’s so much easier to tear out old carpet if you don’t have to move any furniture!
By keeping all the molding white, they saved lots of time, but there were tons of nail holes to fill.
My color advice to all my clients is to buy samples of each color and paint it on poster board. You need to see how the color looks in the room during the day, at night, when it’s cloudy and sunny and under lamp light. You also have to view the color on each wall in the room. Remember, color will always look darkest on the window wall and lightest on the wall opposite the window.
T & K are not afraid of color (yeah!). After trial and error, they chose a deep purple for the living room and a medium brown in the dining room.
Both colors are saturated hues, but really work well together. The rooms are connected by a wide opening with lots of windows and sunlight. The white trim and ceiling and light wood floors balance the intense colors on the walls.
Next step, new carpeting and removing a stove.
