“One man’s style must not be the rule of another’s.”
Jane Austen
A quote from my favorite author. I love Pride and Prejudice so much, I practically know it by heart! Jane was brilliant on so many levels. She was a woman ahead of her time.
No matter what she was referring to, take it to heart when designing and decorating your home. Whatever you do, your home should reflect your personality. Period. Never apologize. A good designer will help you discover your style then help decorate your home.
It’s not always easy trying to figure out what it is you love best.
First things first. Collect shelter and design magazines. Tear out ALL the pages (looking at rooms you don’t like is just as helpful as looking the ones you love). Gather a group of friends and do it together. What woman doesn’t like to eat, drink and talk design? Hello!
Of course take advantage of design sites online. Check out Pinterest, Olioboard and the gazillion others out there.
Sort the photos in two piles: Loves and Hates. Then start to analyze each picture and figure out what or why you like or hate something. Is it the color? Furniture too formal or too modern? Too much clutter or too clean? Go with your initial gut reaction.
Create categories and files. When you are ready to work with a designer or go shopping, you will have a place to start.
If your file is anything like mine, it’s jam packed, always evolving and unlike anyone else’s!
