Small Wonder ~~ Advent Calendars
There are all sorts of Advent Calendars you can purchase to help your kids through the month of December. When my boys were young, silly little toys or more candy just seemed ridiculous to me. So we created our own Advent Calendar tradition.
We cut out a Christmas tree from green construction paper and cut 24 little openings. The most charming trees are the ones that the boys did themselves with backward numbers and little decorations.
I cut slips of paper and wrote an activity or project that would happen that day. Some events were as exciting as “Sit on Santa’s lap” or “Decorate the Christmas Tree”. Others represented simple family traditions or time together. We might plan to watch a Christmas movie or wrap presents. Depending on the age of my kids, licking stamps for Christmas cards could be a big deal!
Every year, some of the notes would stay the same. Patrick’s birthday will always be December 3 and we always went out to the woods to cut down our tree. Other ideas changed from year to year. Creating a family tradition was the fun part. My boys would race to the kitchen every morning to be the first to pull out the slip of paper to see what Christmas excitement would happen that day. I miss those days and hope if my sons have children of their own someday, they will pass on the tradition.
Share some of your favorite Christmas ideas and traditions. I would love to hear from you.
